On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)
Buy gold bullion coins.

Krugerrands are the best known of all the modern one ounce gold bullion coins, and are more readily available in greater quantities and can generally be bought at lower prices than any other one ounce bullion coins. They are not especially attractive, when compared to sovereigns and they do not possess much in the way of historical interest. But what they do have is consistent high production quality and they are a cost effective way for small investors to buy gold.

1928 U.S. Gold Certificate $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000 bills are all legal to own, and all are highly collectible. The $10 and $20 notes are typically worth from twice face value to $100 or more depending on condition, while the $50 and $100 notes are more valuable. $500 and $1,000 Gold Certificates are scarce and we recommend consultation with one of our currency experts if you possess one of these notes.

Most U.S. $2 Federal Reserve Notes from 1976 and 1995 are worth no more than face value. Original packs from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing carry a premium, as do Star Notes which typically sell for $10 to $20 in Uncirculated condition for the common district banks. Star Notes from the Kansas City and Minneapolis district banks (I-* and J-* notes) are very scarce, and sell for more than $100 in Uncirculated condition.

Old gold coins should never be cleaned. But it's not just excited treasure hunters that make this mistake. Even archaeologists working with ancient coins come under fire for the practice of restoring ancient coins, although in their case it may be necessary in order to see the coin well enough to properly date and categorize it. Those coins will not end up in most collections. But then again, archaeologists are not trying to preserve numismatic value.

While obsolete gold coins are primarily collected for their numismatic value, gold bullion coins today derive their value from the metal (gold) content - and as such are viewed by some investors as a "hedge" against inflation or a store of value. South Africa introduced the Krugerrand in 1967 to cater to this market; this was the reason for its convenient and memorable gold contentexactly one troy ounce. It was the first modern, low premium (i.e. priced only slightly above the bullion value of the gold) bullion gold coin. Bullion coins are also produced in fractions of an ounce typically half ounce, quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce. Bullion coins do not carry a meaningful face value, as their value is mainly dictated by their troy weight and the current market price of the precious metal. (If a face value is minted on the coin, it is done for legal or other reasons and it is nearly always significantly less than the actual value of the coin.) Gold has an international currency code of XAU under ISO 4217.

There is an interesting fractional currency which is much sought after by collectors. These are private banknotes from the 1800s. Before the US government created a national banknote there were some banks issuing their own money without government backing. However, it was not long before these banks were closed down and the banknotes were counterfeited and altered.

Make sure the seller has a return policy that will allow you a refund if you are not satisfied with the coin. This is especially important if you are buying a non-certified coin. You want the option to return it if your grading service returns a lower grade than you bought it at.
